Powering all those external hard drives

Anyone try replacing all of the wall warts with your PCs power supply? I found some PCIe molex to 2.1mm x 5.5mm cables. Which means you should be able to plug into an extra video card power connector and run the barrel plugs out to the drives.

Thanks,
Paul

How about something like this?

I checked with my Kill-A-Watt and my Seagate external drives are consuming between 5 and 6 watts. Being 12 volts and 5 Amps (60 watts) that should comfortably handle 8 drives.

Thoughts?

I get it tomorrow. I will be sure to get a reading before and after and see if this saves any power over the wall warts.

WARNING: this did not work for me.
The Seagates use a 2.5mm x 5.5mm connector, and this splits into 8 2.1mm x 5.5mm connectors.
So not working.

Not too worried about losing 13 bucks, but I still want something that works.
I’ll keep hunting.

Cheers,
Paul

I was able to get everything work the way I wanted. While the power savings wasn’t as much as I had hoped, the outcome was worth the effort.
